COREL PROFESSIONAL PHOTOS CD-ROM UNIX INSTALLATION GUIDE PHOTOS CD-ROM SCREEN SAVER FOR SOLARIS. This chapter describes how to install the Corel Professional Photos Screen Saver application and provides details about how to use the Screen Saver. INSTALLING THE SCREEN SAVER. 1. Insert the Corel Professional Photos disk into your CD-ROM drive. 2. If the CD-ROM is not mounted automatically, please mount it at the unix prompt. *** If you have problems mounting the CD-ROM, please contact your *** *** local system administrator. *** 3. Create an install directory on your hard disk to which the Corel Screen Saver binaries will be copied. Please ensure that you have read/write access and at least 55 Megs of free disk space. i.e. Syntax: mkdir 4. CD into that directory. 5. From the , run the "ss_inst" executable found on the CD_ROM in order to install the Corel Screen Saver. Please note that the "ss_inst" file is situated in a subdirectory called unix. i.e. Syntax: #//unix/ss_inst 6. The install program will then prompt you for the cdrom installation directory. Please specify the "//unix". The install program will then proceed to tar off the required files into your current directory. The installation program should report a successful installation. 7. Once the installation is complete, you can remove the "sstar" file which was copied to the directory. This file is not required to run the screen saver and by removing it, you will free up disk space. 8. There are two variables to set prior to running the Corel Screen Saver: the PATH and the LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Please append the "/bin" directory to your current PATH. i.e. Syntax: #setenv path=($path /bin) (for C-shell) Please append the "/lib" directory to your current shared libraries path. i.e. Syntax: #setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH=($LD_LIBRARY_PATH /lib) (for C-shell) *** For other shells, please contact your local system administrator. *** You may then proceed to configuring your screen saver. USING THE COREL SCREEN SAVER FOR SOLARIS The Corel Screen Saver application is a two process set of applications. There is a configuration application that allows a user to create a screen saver configuration file, and a runtime application that uses the configuration file and displays a number of images that consume the entire desktop screen. The configuration application is written using the Motif toolkit for X windows servers. The runtime application is written in the Kodak Photo CD access tookit and X11 intrinsics. The runtime application does not currently have password protection, to this end the Corel Screen Saver will not secure your workstation from other users. If you choose to include sound files with your screen saver configuration; remember that the Solaris version of Corel Screen Saver will only deal with Sun audio sound files. Refer to the man pages for audiotool(1) for more information. Due to the runtime processing of Kodak Photo CD images the following rules of thumb should be considered when choosing a runtime screen saver configuration: Each Screen Saver image is approximately 1200 by 1100 pixels wide. Each pixel is configured with 8 bits of colour. Each image is converted into an X11 compatible image using the Kodak Photo CD access toolkit. Therefore, each image will permanently consume a large amount of memory while the runtime application is alive. If you are using an X terminal or a diskless workstation then the runtime application will use a server somewhere on the network to service swap space. If your configuration uses many images then the applications' data will be swapped between the server and the desktop that is using the Corel Screen saver application. The Photo CD images are read once from the CD-ROM that contains their files. For as long as the runtime application is alive there is no need to retain the CD-ROM disk in the CD-ROM drive. If for some reason the screen saver runtime application stops the CD-ROM disk must be in the Caddy when it restarts, especially if the computer is an X terminal or diskless workstation. Each time a Photo CD image is read and transformed into an X image the size of your workstation display the time required to perform the operation is approximately 5 minutes per image. This time is considerable due to the fact that the image resides on the CD-ROM in one resolution( 512 by 256 pixels ) and has to be transformed to an image to fit the desktop screen height and width. The sizes and times should be taken into consideration when initiating a runtime instance of the screen saver and deciding which images you would like in your screen saver configuration. The screen saver configuration application's main screen is invoked by running the corel_config_app executable found in the /bin directory. There are 4 items on the application menu bar. The first is the 'File' option menu. The second is the 'View" option menu. The third is the 'Option' option menu. The fourth is the 'Help' option menu. The 'File' option menu contains these items: New: Allows the user to start a new screen saver configuration. The user is prompted for information in two stages. The first stage is to prompt the user for a file name that will contain the runtime screen saver information. The second stage is to prompt the user for the location of screen saver files. The image file selection dialogue is a standard Motif File Selection Dialogue. The Filter directory name is the user's path when the configuration application was started. The user can double click on items in the directory list box to change the Filter directory selection. When the Filter selection area contains the name of the of the appropriate directory the user may begin selecting file names from the File Item list. Selections can occur by double clicking on file name of selecting the file with a single mouse click and pressing the 'Ok' button of the dialogue box. Each selected file will be copied to a list box behind the selection dialogue as a reminder of which image files where selected. When the file selection is completed, please click on the cancel button. At this point, both dialogue boxes will disappear and your current settings will be written to your configuration file. If you wish to further customize your screen saver settings, please see "Options" menu below. Open:Allows a current configuration to opened and it's images to be viewed. The user is prompted for the configuration file name in the same manner as above. Save:Allows a configuration to be saved using the name specified in the New configuration file dialogue. Save As:Allows for a different file name to be used than that which was specified in the New configuration file dialogue. Exit: Will exit the application. The 'View' menu has three items called: 1) 'Configuration'. 2) Page Up. 3) Page Down .When image files have been selected this option may be instituted to view the images found in the image file selection list. They are shown large enough for the user to judge if the image is appropriate or not( this is larger than thumbnail size as some darker photos tend to look almost black in a thumbnail resolution ). Page Up an be used to scroll through images in the configuration in the up direction. Page Down can be used to scroll through images in the configuration in the down direction( these configuration images may not fit on the screen depending on the number of images in the configuration. If there are more images than can fit on the screen the Page Up and Page Down actions scroll through the list of images in the configuration ). The 'Option' menu contains 4 items. 1) Delay Time. 2) Change Rate 3)Sound Repitition. 4) Scale The Delay time is specified in minutes and controls the amount of time the screen saver remains inactive, monitoring the desktop, before starting. The change rate is the rate at which multiple images are switched between each other. Sound Repitiion will repeat the sound files times before stopping. The Scale option allows for the images to be reduced in size during runtime if the default image size is larger than your monitor size. The 'Help' menu contains items to display text about various functions or attributes of the screen saver configuration application. The screen saver application name is: 'corel_config_app' and can be found in $/bin. The runtime application is named corel_ss and takes one typed parameter: -f. The file name to supply as the argument to -f is the name of the configuration file specified in the configuration utility. If you are running on a machine( X terminal, diskless workstation ) you may experience problems with the runtime application. In the event of an error specifying a resource problem or problems dealing with the Kodak Photo CD toolkit, remove one or more images from your configuration file. You can use your favourite editor to delete the lines of image file names at your discretion. TECHNICAL SUPPORT For Technical Support on this product please do one of the following. 1.
